Happiness Essay

What makes a person happy? Happiness is an endless path in life. Everyone has a different opinion about what makes them happy. People have always been attentive to the issue of what makes humans happy. However, getting a large amount of money is a pursuit for many people, especially the young generation around the world. In the article, â€Å"Get Happy† by Walter Mosley, he states how, â€Å"Happiness is considered by most to be a subset of wealth† (87). Quote above explains how money is the first thing that comes in person’s mind that make them happy because with the money one can buy anything he wants.Money is one of the most important things in over lives because we need it to have a home to live in, food to eat, clothes to wear, and to get from here to there. That’s where the â€Å"money can buy happiness† phrase comes in because people believe that since money can buy everything it can buy happiness too. However, I disagree and believe that hap piness primarily comes from relationships. First of all, money cannot buy relationships in a person’s life. Family and friends are one of the most important sources of happiness for most people. It doesn’t matter how much money a person has, if he doesn’t have any family or friends that he can share with, then it doesn’t bring very much happiness. As Mosley stated in his article, â€Å"It [Money] can only buy bigger TVs and comelier sex partners.. † (87). above quote explains money can only buy stuff that can make a person temporary happy. For instance, some people are really rich but lonely because they have no one by their side, while others are poor but happy with their close friends and family. In my personal experience, I have a friend back in India who was very rich and his parents got everything he wanted. When my parents bought me a bicycle, his parents bought him a bike. It looked like he had a perfect life, but once I got to know him better ; I got to realize that the life I thought that was perfect because of money was actually not perfect. Whenever his parents came home they always fought about little things, they never eat dinner together and they don’t even care about their son. They didn’t have any connections between them.So it’s true doesn’t matter how much wealth one have but one can never buy happiness that comes from one’s family. Secondly, Money is limited, it cannot last forever. Money can end easily and it cannot be obtained easily either. Even if money could buy happiness, it would only be for a little because things tend to disappear at some point. On the other hand, strong family bonds will never disappear but will be always by one’s side, continuing to bring one happiness. In addition, Mosley states, â€Å"how most of those people [wealthy people] will lose that wealth before they die† (87).No matter how rich a person is but there always will be a time w here all the money from the person will be gone. For example, my dad told me a story about this guy who was very wealthy in India but because of too much money he was too proud of himself and started breaking relationships with other people. He got caught in fraud for his business and everything was taken by the government. And just like that all the money was gone and there was no one by his side. In the article, â€Å"If You’re happy and you know it, You’re in Third† by Adriana Barton, she states about athlete names Ms.Bahrke who got a third number in Olympic game and still says â€Å" I’m going to be ‘Mrs. Happy. [Getting married]’† (84). She wasn’t sad that she couldn’t get a first place but she was happy that she is getting married; it shows how relationships can bring happiness. Thus, money cannot buy happiness. Lastly, money can negatively consume in one’s life. Wealth is a good thing but it also can ruin a person’s life instead of giving someone happiness. Money is very addictive; even if person has a lot of money he will often never be satisfied with what he has.For example, instead, he will try to become wealthier and because of that he may not have time for his family or friends and will start losing relationships. It will have an effect on their children, and at the end, all he will have is money but no one else at his side. In the article, â€Å"What you don’t know makes you nervous,† by Daniel Gilbert, he states, â€Å"psychologists and economists now know that although the very rich are no happier than the merely rich†¦ † (80). the above quote states how most of the time people who has a lot money are the one that are not happy. If money makes a one happy then why wealthy people are are not happier than the poor people? The main reason is relationships. Wealthy people are so into making money that it makes them so blind that they cannot see the h appiness that their family can bring to them. And at the end they have all the money but they don’t have any shoulders to cry on or to share the money, happiness with. While poor people might don’t have money but they have the family that takes care of each other which is most important happiness a person can have. Thus, relationships can bring a person long lasting happiness but money won’t.Too much money can make person’s life depressed instead of giving happiness. But family will always be there by one’s side. In conclusion, I don’t think that it? s somehow possible to â€Å"buy happiness†. Thus, we should be aware that it is friendships and family that truly bring us the happiness to which we aspire. Money might be able to make people temporarily happy but that’s not the point, the point is that it can’t buy anyone long lasting happiness. Being happy is an emotion it is something you sense, not something you buy. Tha t is why happiness is priceless. Life Expectancy and Resources

| | |To Drill or Not to Drill | |HUM/114 | | | | | The topic of drill or not to drill is a big topic. Some believe that we have plenty of resources now and that we should save them for later generations that may need them more than we do. Instead they think we should invest in alternative sources of energy, such as solar power and wind.Others believe that we should go ahead and use the resources that we have available to use, starting with the untapped oil fields in Alaska and in the Gulf Coast, and even all the other areas in the country that have not been explored. Others say trying to obtain new power sources will be very expensive and a long process. I can honestly say that I agree with both sides but I am in favor of the United States using all the resources they have and not trying to come up with new way to power America.A new way to power America is not a bad idea just not the one we need to fix our problem. Solar panels and windmills still should be worked on for the fu ture of America, but as for the present we should use all our oil resources. The reason I say that we need to use our resources is that we are not going to live forever, the average human life expectancy is 67. 2 years. So in 200 years that would be my third generation of children and I am sure in 200 years they will have the same issues that we have today if not worse. Our country had an energy shortage in the 1970s and I am sure that they were saying the same things that scientist are saying today. On the other hand I do believe that we should look into securing other sources of energy just as a backup. There is nothing wrong with developing a plan b, in a just in case situation. Even though the majority of scientists think that we will never run out of resources, there are still some scientist that think that we do not have much time left. More research and studies can help us come up with a better solution to the questions that we all have. All the data that the scientists are com ing up with should be compiled and have a scientist with an unbiased opinion examine the data from both scientist and see exactly where we stand as a country. If we were not to take our focus off finding more resources and still try and find other ways to power our nation we would still be accomplishing both goals. If at any time we needed to switch over to non-fossil fuel energy we could. We need energy, so why not find as much as we can now and not worry about if we will run out of the resources that we are using. The children are the future and as long as we keep producing them than there will always be someone who can figure out how to find the United States more energy. Question In July 2012, in exercising its powers under the EU Markets Essay

Question In July 2012, in exercising its powers under the EU Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID), UK Financial Se - Essay Example The market would therefore have been a highly competitive one with fewer shares to be traded among several shareholders. The case of survival of the fittest would have therefore arisen. In their bid to acquire London Metal Exchange Ltd, Honk Kong Exchange Investment was mandated to satisfy the provisions of the scheme of arrangement under Part 26 Companies Act 2006, which addresses the issue of legislation to loans and debt. This procedure was necessitated for a number of legal reasons and interpretations. Commonly, it is noted that the need of scheme of arrangement arises for companies such as Hong Kong Exchange Investment to make compromise with its key stakeholders on issues regarding solvent company’s reconstruction. ... cy and solvency Act4, it is very important to stress the fact that the scheme of arrangement is not in place to conceptualize a company’s scheme to become insolvent. With this said, the analysis can well continue on the provisions of the scheme of arrangement involved in the case of Hong Kong Exchange Investment as it would now be known that the scheme of arrangement was entered only as a cost shedding strategy and not as a means of announcing the company’s likelihood to become insolvent. Outcome and implications of the court approval for stakeholders Even though back in July 2012 the United Kingdom Financial Services Authority had exercised its powers under the European Union Markets in Financial Instruments Directive under the 2004/39/EC of the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) to approve Hong Kong Exchange Investment’s acquisition of London Metal Exchange Ltd, the process was somewhat put in a limbo as a court petition was undertaken for the c ourt to sanction the Scheme that had been started and to give a legislative confirmation to the related capital reduction5. This court petition was in reaction to the approved purchasing capital of ?1.39 billion that had been granted earlier. This court case was heard on 5 December 2012 and the issues of the court had it that Hong Kong Exchange Investment was cleared to main its capital base for the acquisition. As part of the issues considered by the court was the remaining conditions to the transaction that had been set out in the Scheme Document. Earlier, the purchasing company, which was Hong Kong Exchange Investment, had fully satisfied condition 1(a) found in Part III of the scheme document that touches on the transaction that had taken place far back on 9 July 2012. European Financial Crisis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

European Financial Crisis - Essay Example Some countries such as Germany have adopted a very firm position on how to handle the situation which does not go well with other nations who have a contrary opinion (Hummel, 2013). There has been a slow as well as the indecisive response from the European decision-makers. The issues involve a large number of nations with different divergent approaches towards solving the crisis which has contributed to the slow pace of implementing the recommendations. Germany insisted on the adoption of stern actions aimed at reducing the budgetary deficits based on the postponement of other solutions. The slow response by the leaders allowed the problem to spread from one nation to another and the condition worsened at every instance. Those responsible for the crisis in the financial sector include the commercial banks that have continued to use riskier financial instruments that have led to banks becoming weak in the sense that they have to use their personal funds to finance their huge deficits rather than lending to other firms as well as households. The crisis is due to the continued problems witnessed in the banking sector across entire Europe. The banks have been deemed to be susceptible to changes in the financial sector (Doyran, 2011). The political class is responsible for the crisis in the government due to their hard and tough stance towards the coming up with solutions to the crisis. The political leaders are responsible for the violation of the set rules governing the operations of the European Union.

Superior Foods - Essay Example As the study outlines to maintain competitiveness, 25% of daily-wage production workers had to be dismissed for next 3-4 months until the bans would remove and production process resume. The company is bound to reduce existing number of production employees because of changes in external environment; however, the old workers could be hired again once Superior Foods comes out of crisis. In this way, employees could be mentally prepared and would possibly not portray strong resistance. The communication would enable to maintain relationships, confidence and trust over employers, because they could be recruited again once the situation comes under control. From this study it is clear that it would be better to use an indirect approach to communicate negative message or news with employees working at production plants. Indeed, the reporter would start with a positive note to recall the value workers receive at Superior Foods. He would then explain all the recent market changes and reasons that have compelled the international food producer and exporter to take tough decisions to restore competitiveness in food industry. This would help making workers mentally prepared about any expected negative news from strategic planners. Then, the reporter would convey the bad news so that workers could assimilate this shock and accept the motives behind that decision. Finally, the message would end on a positive note with a reassurance to valued employees that they could rejoin Superior Foods after relaxation in bans and improvement in business prospects. As you all know that our company Superior Foods pay special attention to its valued workers an d opt for their welfare and well-being. However, we have been writing this letter to communicate recent changes that have taken place in our domestic (USA) and global markets. Make a summary - Essay Example She narrates how even after a long time writing she would feel empty even after doing research (1). She used would struggle writing, cancel even what seemed sensible at first until when she would decide to write anything after which she would come up with a good write-up. Peter Elbow asserts that the most effective way to improve one’s writing is by doing ‘free writing’ which he explains as the art of writing anything that comes into one’s mind for given period of time a day at least thrice a week nonstop. Though seemingly crazy he says, free writing allows one avoid the extensive editing that writing allows. He challenges readers to consider the many times they have made great speeches even when they had started the speech so poorly. He asserts that this is the principle to powerful writing. He further says that seeking to have a perfectly knitted write up right at the beginning of writing is preparing to kill any possibility of becoming a writer leave alone a great one as it would make one give up on writing The idea brought about by both Elbow and Lamott are a bit new to many of us including me as we have gone through an education system that discourages it as learners are coerced into accepting the existing content without questioning. My experience of trying to use the method in writing school assignments never bore considerable positive fruits. Both Lamott and Elbow agree that the secret to becoming a great writer is simply writing what comes to one’s mind without considerations of whether it is what one wants the readers to see and then editing later. However Lamott unlike Elbow seems to encourage writers to not just write anything about anything but rather to make a coherent line of thoughts. On the other hand, Elbow allows one to write anything including repeating the same word so long as one does not stop writing within the time set for writing. I absolutely agree with the

Color-blind racism - Essay Example However, despite these attractive arguments, there is evidence to show that black people are more afflicted with HIV/AIDS, and there is also high infant mortality rate among the black people. There is also proof that there Asians, Arabs, and Muslims have been racially profiled especially in the fight against terrorism. Colorblind racism has succeeded in uniting the white people together instead of addressing the problem of racism (Copeland, pp. 68-69). Various ways have been on how the color blind racism can be addressed. A strong suggestion is the belief in one God among all persons of America. This is will make people also trust in all be one irrespective of their races. Malcolm X gives an example of the pilgrimage to Mecca where he saw all men actually worship one God and there we no distinction as to whether one is a white or a black Muslim. He, therefore, sees the panacea for the racism malady in America as spiritual in nature. He says that Americans ought to copy Muslims as he argues that among the Muslim community, there is no iota of racism (Haley and Malcolm,

Law for Business Students - Essay Example It makes the contract completely cancelled and the precondition of the contract has to be considered for the legal status of English law. In other words, it is also described as the right of an individual who is the signatory to a contract to return to the similar state as earlier before entering into the agreement, if the courts doubt legal status. The repudiation may be in the form of mutual consent or individual action. It can also be practised by an issue of the decree by the court. Even though the invalidation of original contract subcontract situation, it may also be exercised under the circumstances of fraud, duress, material breach or default and misrepresentation. An oral or written contract can be rescinded on the ground of fraud. The right to rescind for fraud is allowed because of the logic that the defrauded party has failed to perform. However, all situations will not be declared as correct grounds for rescission based on fraud. False statements of value, or the failure to perform a promise to do something in the future without fraudulent intent, should not be considered as a basis for rescission for fraud or misrepresentation. The strong proof for fraudulent misrepresentation is required to be produced for justifying the repudiation of the contract. Once sufficient grounds were found confirming the involvement of the fraud, the victimized party can affirm the contract and can also sue for damages. Similarly, if any party violates the norms or provisions of the contract by involving in duress, the other party can repudiate the contract. It is also found that the same rules apply for repudiation of contract as in the case of fraud. However, the sufficient ground of duress has to be halved in the English court of law. This is to protect the interests of the innocent people.

Germany and the germans Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Germany and the germans - Essay Example It would not be untrue if said that religion took its complete toll on him and the course of his life changed forever after experiencing some personal hardships. Here is actually where the climax in the life story of Martin Luther develops because after experiencing a serious emotional turbulence episode one day as he was returning to Erfurt after visiting home, he actually decided to become a monk later on and gave up his law studies in favor of other newly developed interests. This change of plans and decisions did not gain him much appreciation from the family and friends circle in the start, but later on things got better for him when he got appointed as a priest in the church and then he immersed himself in advanced theological studies (Advameg, Inc). This phase of his life is considered to be very critical by all historians because that was when he began to develop ideas and arguments against the traditional and orthodox Christian beliefs. Martin Luther is a very powerful figure in the history of Christianity and studying his life and different events related to it holds immense fascination in itself. This is because Luther entered a monastery when he was quite young and not many people feel any strong bondage with religion when they are that young. Luther, however, is quite distinguished in respect that not only he underwent complete religious transformation as a youth but he also decided to give up his law studies in order to become a monk and then later on in life, he went on to study theology. By this time, he began developing many theories and arguments that openly defied the traditionally established Christian rules which gained him much criticism from the Roman Catholic Church. That was a very hard time for Luther because in spite of so much antagonism and repulsion, he decided to stay firm on his writings which were already distributed throughout Germany. If on one hand he was considered

Income elasticity of demand Essay Example for Free

Income elasticity of demand Essay World trade for wheat is greater than for all other crops combined and is cultivated in 128 counties. A farming company specializing in wheat and barley production (Silo Pty Ltd), one of many producers in the international market, is greatly affected by storms in the U.S and South America. These storms have reduced the global wheat yield by 50 per cent. Wheat continues to be the most important food grain resource as it is used in a large majority of foods around the world. Its production leads other crops such as rice, maize and potatoes. Despite wheat’s great importance in the food industry, it would still be regarded as being price ‘elastic’ and have a positive income elasticity, as there are many competitive suppliers around the world, which could possibly lead to fluctuations in prices and prevent large shortages. Price elasticity of demand arises due to the responsiveness of the quantity demanded of a good to change its price, when all other influences on buyers’ plans stay the same. Income elasticity of demand is the responsiveness of demand due to a change in income. Factors that generally affect the supply of goods or services include, the price of factors of production, the prices of related goods produced, expected future prices, the number of suppliers, technology and the state of nature. Demand is also effected by such factors as, the prices of related goods, expected future prices, income, expected future income and credit, population and preferences. If ever there were a shortage of wheat due to bad weather or storms, such that has happened to Silo Pty Ltd, other crops such as barley or maize could be used as an alternative resource, thus the supply would decrease and eventually the demand would decrease slightly as well as there are alternative resources at possibly cheaper prices. This would result in wheat being considered as a normal good in western society as for which demand increases as income increases. Graph 1 shows the situation before the storms hit and the effects after the storms. The demand curve is D and the original supply curve is labelled S0. After the storms hit, the supply curve shifted left to S1. This represents the supply decreasing, further increasing the price. Graph 2 shows the effects of the expected future price rise. Demand increases, shifting from D0 to D1, supply decreases shifting the supply curve from S1 to S2.

Can Death of a Salesman be Described as a Tragedy Essay Example for Free

Can Death of a Salesman be Described as a Tragedy Essay Aristotle first defined a tragedy in literature as a story where the main character is a hero a very brilliant person except that he has one major flaw which leads to his downfall, namely, death. Shakespeare then expanded on this and produced his world famous tragedies such as Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and Hamlet. In all of these plays, the main character is a person of high social standing and exceptionally talented, however each has a very serious flaw as well. For example, Romeo is of Italian nobility and is very efficient with a sword and dagger but he is a fool for love and falls in love with Juliet as soon as he sees her, despite already being in love with Rosaline beforehand. That is the flaw which eventually leads to his demise. This definition has over time become the benchmark for a tragedy. Arthur Miller was an immigrant to the USA and can be seen as the opposite of Willy. Willy, however, is a proud born and bred American and holds to heart the very fundamentals of the American Dream a very capitalistic ethos. Miller, on the other hand, had communist beliefs which eventually landed him in trouble with the government. Both Death of a Salesman and another of Millers plays, All My Sons both have the foundations of the American Dream and also both secretly criticize the capitalistic belief. In Death of a Salesman, Willy dies just trying to live the American Dream and he never gives up on it an indication of his extreme optimism in all things despite how blatantly unrealistic achieving the American Dream was for him. The characterisation of Willy Loman is also quite interesting. He strives to be like a very old, successful salesman he met that worked from home, who when he died, numerous people he knew went to his funeral. He is someone everyone can relate to and make us love him, but he also has qualities that we all loathe and make us hate him at times. This is purposefully done by Miller to only make it more shocking when Willy dies in the end despite it is made quite obvious to readers it is inevitable. His name is also carefully planned out by Miller Willy is an average name and nothing special, but his surname is a clear reference to what he is. Loman low man is clearly meant to show how ordinary he is, despite just how much Willy strives to be the opposite. Willys main character flaw is that he is just too proud. For example, when he is offered a job by Charley his neighbour after being fired, Willy straight out refuses and is quite offended as he sees it as giving up and asking for help. This is shown by when Willy says, I dont want your goddam job! After Charley politely offers him a good one. Willys strong beliefs in the American Dream are also shown when he says, A man cant go out the way he came in, Ben, a man has to add up to something, by coming in, Willy means when a man is born and by going out, Willy means when a man dies. Also, adding up to something must mean being rich in Willys context. This follows the American Dream in that a man makes something of himself from nothing. Willys greatest fear has always been dying with nothing exactly what happens in the end. A use of dramatic irony by Miller, Willy willingly fulfils his own utmost fear. That quotation is also foreshadowing Willys death another intentional device by Miller. Besides his pride, another flaw of Willy is very poor and deteriorating mental health and he is subject to random flashbacks and hallucinations often of his dead and once very successful older brother, Ben, someone Willy idolizes. An example of one of his hallucinations is when Willy says, Ben, Ive been waiting for so long, despite Ben being dead at this point. The play is also cleverly structured by Miller. Music for example a flute plays in the background during some scenes for an added dramatic effect. This flute is heard in both the opening and ending scene. The play also makes heavy use of flashbacks, but sometimes a flashback scene plays on stage at the same time as the scene set in the present. This technique is seen in Act Two, while Willy is in the restaurant with Biff and Happy. On the whole, the structure is skilfully used to make the storyline more immersive to the audience. Although, it does not have the same level of effect when being read from a book. The historical context of the play greatly influences both the themes and language of the play greatly. Death of a Salesman is set during the late 1940s. This time setting influences both the characters and the audience, as the play first premiered on the tenth of February, 1949 the life of Willy Loman was something Americans going to watch the play at that time could relate to. Sixty years on, more modern audiences will react differently as times have changed and the idea of the American Dream isnt as dominant anymore. Besides the American Dream, other common themes can be found in the play. Betrayal is quite clear as Willy betrays Linda by cheating on her with the Woman, and Willy also sees the way Biff rebels against him as betrayal and as Willy himself says, Spite! . Another major theme would be one man Willy in this case being kept back from his dreams by society. In addition, the language used by characters matches the historical setting and context. In performances of the play, characters do not usually have the New Yorker accent you would expect, but they talk like a New Yorker. For example, words like gee, and rhetorically asking the person they are talking to if they hear this? On the subject of whether we can define Death of a Salesman as a tragedy or not is not a simple question as there is substantial evidence for both sides of the argument. To begin with, those who say that it is a tragedy may argue that it ends with the death of Willy, the main character, just like other tragedies. Moreover, Willy has explicit flaws which slowly lead to his downfall throughout the play. Finally, Willy may not ever do anything that can be deemed heroic, but within his own household he is very much a figure that is looked up to so it may still be a tragedy, albeit on a less grand scale. In contrast, you could argue that it is not a tragedy as all other characters from Shakespeares tragedies were people of high standing whereas Willy is not. Additionally, Willy is not at all a hero by any definition in fact he is in some ways a bad person as will be shown. Finally, Shakespeares heroes have quite dramatic flaws, whereas Willy has the same flaws as every ordinary human being. These are quite convincing arguments to why it isnt a tragedy. We will be looking at each argument more in-depth. The play follows the tragedies of Shakespeare in that the main character dies in the end. Willy commits suicide by crashing his car so that his family would get the life insurance money of $20,000 and make life easier for them. This is of course a noble reason to kill oneself as it is very selfless. However, it would make Willy a hypocrite as killing himself is also him giving up something he condemned. Nevertheless, his intentions were admirable and this could make him seen as a hero since he willingly died for a selfless cause.

Knudsen, Hungry Jack, Cafà © Bustelo, White Lily, Five Roses, and Carnation etc. With the policy of Owning and Marketing Number 1 brand sold all around the North America, Smucker Company has been able to remain in the top quartile of Fortunes magazine since the magazine created the ranking. SWOT Analysis Strengths The Company is able to become No. 1 food brand Company in North America because of its remarkable strengths. Smuckers has always been cautious in the series of the acquisition of new Company. Smuckers tries to acquire only established brands than building a new brand from scratch. They also focus on the only brands they think they could develop globally and reduce the number of unwilling items. Smuckers Company has the ability to shift sales to products with higher margins increasing the efficiency and pulling down the unit costs. J.M Smucker never back up themselves when it comes with competing branded food manufacturers or private-label manufacturers. Smuckers strengths also include its ability to keep employees happy and it remains Fortune Magazines top 25 companies. Weakness Even though the Company was doing better in USA, Canada, and Australia; however, globally the company was becoming less relevant. The Companys 2001 annual sales were far less comparatively to other big companys sales. The Company small size and limited product line made it less capable in competitive bargain advantages and in store production. The Company was lacking house-sale product and also lacking of effective marketing for their low sugar free jams. There could be a possible susceptible to lawsuits from product mislabeling. Opportunity J.M Company has been producing attractive products and brands. But huge competitors with the big scale such as Nestle were also encouraging Smuckers Company to go from limited product line to consolidation in order to have a smooth flow in the business. Thus co-branding with other companies, taking over the Multifoods, and targeting baby boomers those were looking for peanut butter substitutes makes the most of the opportunity. They also got the opportunity of a service division to restaurant, schools, hospital, college students, corporate, private schools, and country club. During the 90s the woman working outside was increasing remarkably; they were eating their lunches outside their houses that helps increase significant percentage in food market. The Company increase overall profitability. Threat There were many external threats to the Smucker Company; major one includes the competition such as Kraft, Nestle, and Campbell. Another threat concludes the fierce competition between the branded food manufacturer and private label manufacturer. Private manufacturers price was attractively below then the branded label. There was a significant increase in the fruit prices from growers that leads the Company use less real fruit decreasing the quality of the product. Consumer tastes were also considers a substantial psychological threat which could make the customer substitute the Smuckers product with others. Recommendation Smucker is a small Company comparing to the giant Company like Nestle. In the competitive market, Smuckers has done its best performance by acquiring the other company making the Company looks bigger. But such rapid consolidation can cause a lot of problem. The latest addition of Crisco and Jiff, as well as much other small and big company has created much concern for the Smukers company. Smuckers sales was projected to go up from $ 651 million in 2001 to 3$ billion in 2002, nearly four times larger. Such marketing plan can cause the Corporates culture and management problem. Smuckers Company need to take it easy in the acquisition process and shouldnt rush trying to increase the majority sell. Smuckers must bring change in the management and make sure of the Companys better culture. The management of each unit needs to be reorganized with a new division. The second recommendation to Smuckers Company is while making a decision weather which product to keep on the market. Company should only focus on the profitability unit and eliminate the product that hasnt added any value to the companys operation. Doing so, Company will have a strong control into its operation. Company should try its best to regulate on further horizontal integration until it is well establish and ready for the vertical integration. For the continued success of the company, research and development would be very important. R D has made it possible for the companys largest growth segment in their Un-Crustable products. Improvement in the technology and innovation will offer the Company with best packaging design that will increase the number of customers. They should also investigate the cost saving measures in production, marketing, and distribution because the market for Smuckers is quiet cost sensitive. Product and process innovation will definitely bring the cost benefit to the company. .

Classification Essay - Types of Wood -- essays research papers

Wood types differ considerably in properties such as color, density, and hardness, making timber a resource that is valuable in a wide variety of contexts. Each of the samples of commonly used woods shown here has distinctive characteristics. Mahogany is a tropical tree prized for its heavy, strong, easily worked wood. Hickory is a tough, hard wood used for tool handles, furniture, and smoke wood for meat. Instrument makers favor the strong, richly colored wood of the cherry tree. Yew is strong, fine-grained wood used for cabinetmaking and archery bows. Like mahogany, the wood of the iroko is resistant to both rot and insects and bears the "interlocked" grain of many tropical trees. Oak is one of the world's most durable woods. It is used in barrel-making, veneers, and flooring....

Foreshadowing in To Build a Fire :: London To Build a Fire Essays

Foreshadowing in To Build a Fire In the story "To Build a Fire" by Jack London, foreshadowing is often used. In this story foreshadowing is an effective way to build up a climax. The foreshadowing is both shown by the environment and things the characters say. An example of environmental foreshadowing was when it said, "Fifty degrees below zero stood for a bite of frost that hurt and that must be guarded against.... "Another example was when the man's "fire was blotted out." These examples show that the cold will be the man's doom, but foreshadow only by telling the necessary details. A major point of foreshadowing was what the oldtimer told the man. The oldtimer told the man that "no man must travel alone in the Klondike after fifty below." If the man would have listened, he could have survived. Because he didn't listen; he lost his life. In conclusion, if you read this story carefully you will pick up the small hints and know the outcome of the story. This also shows that foreshadowing can be direct statements or simple statements of fact. Self Confidence Once a man's self confidence is shaken, it becomes increasingly difficult to act rationally. If you are in a life or death situation, every decision you make stacks the odds either for or against you. Once you make a few bad decisions, you realize that your chances for survival are getting slimmer and slimmer. As this fact settles into your conscious mind, it produces panic. Panic is what happens when the brain can't handle the information it is given. Panic takes over rationality, and as a result, you do and say things that are uncharacteristic of you. Panic destroys your self confidence. In Jack London's short story "To Build a Fire" the reader watches a man's mental condition go from high to devastatingly low. At the first of the story, he is very self confident in his own abilities. This is evident by the way he keeps saying the he will be in camp by six. Also, when one suddenly becomes physically handicapped, and abilities that he depends on and previously took for granted are not available to him, he tends to act very insecurely and unstably.

Logging :: essays research papers

I'm sure some of you have heard at least a little of what is going on down in the beautiful hardwood forests of Tassie? If not here's a short rundown on an extremely threatened area called the Styx valley Forrest... The Styx Valley contains the tallest hardwood trees on Earth. Many of the trees are taller than a 25-storey building, over 400 years old, and up to five metres wide at the base. The Styx is only 70 kilometres west of Hobart and is on the edge of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area – one of the great temperate wilderness areas on Earth. The Styx also contains large areas of unlogged rainforest. These forests are home to many native species of wildlife, including the majestic Wedge-tailed Eagle, the Eastern Pygmy Possum, the Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, owls and rosellas. Other features that occur in the valley include limestone caves, tannin-stained Styx River, and several waterfalls. Now to the bad news†¦ Most of the giants of the Styx are threatened by logging. Between 300 and 600 hectares of the Styx Valley are logged each year. The main form of logging is clear felling and burning. The logging operations proceed by cutting down all the large timber and bulldozing the rest. The useful timber, primarily destined for woodchips, is removed and the area is then bombed from the air which ensures the whole area burns. Most of these trees will be sold as woodchips overseas for about $15 per tonne. After the logged area is burnt it is reseeded 1080 poison is laid down to kill animals who may feed on saplings. 1080 poison does not kill our native animals by putting in a relaxing sleep, it puts them through a long, agonising death, and it may take hours or even days of suffering for these native animals to die. What is at stake you may ask? Is the loss of some of Australia's, and the worlds, oldest hardwood trees for the sake of some measly woodchips a good enough argument, I certainly think so. The tall trees of the Styx are of international botanical importance. Their tourism potential has yet to be realised. They provide a point of contact with the past that once gone, is gone forever. Tall trees are also important for a sense of environmental continuity for future generations. Just reading this makes me feel sick. Our government says that we cannot stop logging because of job loss. Albert Camus’ “The Stranger” Essay

In Camus’ The Stranger, the author exposes a tension between society and the protagonist’s perspective of society. The reader comes to understand the pointlessness of existence through the protagonist’s lens. Although society defines people by actions, Meursault rejects ideas of categorization and embraces a nihilistic view of life. This judgment passed on individuals is based on an individual’s actions. Meursault realizes that everything that lives must die, therefore no matter what one does in life, one is still doomed to the same fate that everyone else is. Meursault makes all of his decisions based on his notion that his actions are unimportant because no matter how society classifies him, he will still die. It is Meursault’s utter rejection of all things irrational that separate him from his fellow man and make him a â€Å"stranger†. The fact that Meursault doesn’t cry at his own mother’s funeral demonstrates how Meursault is disconnected from the normal human emotions of grief that usually accompany death. Meursault is not even sure when his mother died. â€Å"Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don’t know†(3). He seems to view the rest of humanity as the â€Å"others,† as if he is a mere observer rather than a part of humanity that he was born into. For example, the image of the elderly people gathered around the caretaker â€Å"nodding their heads† at Meursault conjures up the feeling of vultures surveying their prey. Even Meursault himself feels â€Å"that they were there to judge†(10). His behavior only reinforces this division as he finds himself unable to share in the emotional connection and experience of the vigil. For instance, when one of the women starts to cry, his only response to the tender display of love is, â€Å"I wish I didn’t have to listen to her anymore†(10). He does not relate to nor understand the woman’s humanity–as if he were a â€Å"stranger† to the essential elements of what it means to be human. Moreover, when the vigil ends and the elderly friends leave they shake his hand, a gesture to which he mockingly thinks â€Å"†¦as if that night †¦ had somehow brought us closer together† (12). This sarcasm underscores how utterly detached he feels from the rest of the world. After returning from the funeral for his mother, Meursault really demonstrates the meaninglessness of his life. What could possibly be more  boring and meaningless than walking around your apartment for a while? This passage is interesting because it gives the reader a rare glimpse of reflection about his mother. Even here, though, it is ultimately selfish in nature. Now that his mother is gone, he feels that his apartment is too big for him. He still lacks remorse or grief, but he’s realizing how his mother’s death affects him: abstractly and physically. The fact that Meursault thinks the apartment is too big for only him symbolizes his aloneness. Just as the apartment is too big and he lives only in one little part, the world is too big, and he is fundamentally alone. By killing the Arab, Meursault proves that his actions define him, and even if society labels him as a murderer, it does not matter because he is going to die anyway. The murder of the Arab takes place at the climax of the story and it makes the reader wonder why Meursault has no remorse. He is aware of what he is doing and is aware that it is wrong, however he does it anyway. Most people would care if they shot another man, but since he has no cares, he does it with no worries or remorse. â€Å"If the other one moves in, or if he draws his knife, I’ll let him have it† (56). This moment in particular is an example of his detached, passive, and psychotic nature. He offers to kill so nonchalantly that it shows no moral stance whatsoever. He’s so mentally detached that the thought of murder poses no great emotion or even feared remorse. Meursault starts to question why he should care about his life before he dies. He does not question what things would make his life worthwhile, but he questions why he should even question the things that would benefit his life. â€Å"As far as I could see, it didn’t have anything to do with me†(69). This emphasizes the point that Meursault is strongly disjointed from society and his and other peoples’ happiness. All Meursault knows is that it is not worth his time to worry about classifying things as good or bad because he will die regardless of his classification. Meursault is asked about emotions and feelings he doesn’t have or care to have. Meursault is annoyed because this is all a worthless examination into something that will seemingly bring no real conclusion to anything, because life is absurd. Meursault was sure about one thing–death. He was sure he would die, just like everyone else.  Ã¢â‚¬Å"But I was sure about me, about everything, surer than he could ever be, sure of my life and sure of the death I had waiting for me† (120). In his death, Meursault finally becomes part of the mainstream society, along with everyone else. The only guarantee in life is death. Meursault would die regardless of whether he killed the Arab or not. Meursault has reached the understanding that his life is not affected by his actions; it is only affected by his inevitable death. Meursault justifies his actions with his indifference. Whatever he has done in his life could not save him from his death. Meursault’s emotional detachment and disconnect from everyday emotions make him a stranger to humanity.

Android: Mobile os Vs Desktop os

Mobile os Vs Desktop os android was intentional from the ground up as an direct administration (OS) for brisk devices. Its built-in industry and store stick out- counselling constitutions were engineered with outpouring life as whizz of the most critical concerns. The humanoid OS does not work like a desktop operating musical arrangement. On a desktop OS, like Windows, Mac OS X, or Ubuntu Linux, the user is responsible for resolution programs in order to keep a reasonable amount of storage available. On mechanical man, this is not the cuticle. The OS itself automatically removes programs from store as shop is needed. The OS may excessively preload maskings into memory which it presupposes might shortly be needed. Under the Hood of Google humanoid The easiest way I sess think of to visualize Androids grammatical bend is by imagining a house with five rooms The house reconciles Android in usual. The rooms inside, however, represent the five key features in An droids social building * Applications * The Application Framework * Libraries * AndroidRun beat * Linux vegetable marrow. Now, hypothesize that each of these rooms suit a certain number of people. Each soul represents an element of that room. Different rooms hold disparate amounts of people.Applications This first room is a doozy. Its people represent all the applications that you check in Android. Games, SMS a calendar, maps, a browser, and your contacts. alone applications be written in coffee berry ,so you give the sack add or publication away as many of these as you like. The Application Framework As a developer, youll use up full acces to the APIs utilise by the fondness apps. Android is intentional so that any application can publish its capabilities. In turn, any new(prenominal)application can use those capabilities, as well. It has close to security constraints, as is expected, further until now. Thats pretty awesome.Along with all that, you get a Content Provider (which al depresseds apps to sh atomic number 18 information), a Resource Manager (to help you with graphics, layout files, and so forthtera, a Notification Manager (which gives you those annoying stipulation beeps and such), and an Acticity Manager (which manages the life cycle of your apps). each in all, when it comes to creating applications chop-chop and easily, Android has you pinnacleed. Well cover how to economise an application in some some other article. So, you could say that the people in this room atomic number 18 the managers and providers and etc. Believe me, there argon a LOT.Libraries Android has a enclothe of core libraries off of which the applications run. As always, developers can directly regain these. Some of the core libraries take on complimentaryType, SQLite, LibWebCore, and SGL. Android Runtime You could say that the Android runtime room is pretty exclusive it hardly has two people the Dalvik Virtual cable car and the core librarie s (am I getting on your nerves with this people thing yet? ). In Google Android, theres a likewisel called DX. What this does is it executes files in . dex format, which atomic number 18 specially for the Dalvik Virtual Machine. This format is also created for minimal memory footprints, which makes it ideal for cellular telephone phones. The Dalvik Virtual Machine is written so it can run multiple prcesses quickly and smoothly. It relies on the Linux Kernel to do its magic. Well have words about that right after this. Linux Kernel Lastly, we have the Linux Kernel. This little room contains the Keypad, WiFi, Camera, and etc. device number one woods. The Linux Kernel holds all of Androids internal structure together. It uses Linux 2. 6, and also acts like an abstraction form amongst the hardware and the software. 6 single file SYSTEM . 1 Storage media NAND Android uses the YAFFS nictitate file system, the first NAND optimized Linux photo scintillate file system. For mobile de vices, hard disks are too large in size, too fragile and consume too lots agent to be useful. In contrast, frighten away memory provides speedy read access time and better kinetic assault resistance than hard disks. in that location are fundamentally two different types of sprout memory base on their construction technique NOR and NAND. NOR is low density, offers slow writes and abstain reads. NAND is low cost, high density and offers tumultuous writes and slow reads.Embedded systems are increasingly utilize NAND blink away for storage and NOR for code and execution. Limitations alpha limitations of NAND memory include quit erasure and memory snap. Block erasure way of life that when erasing any memory the whole period must be erased. NAND can be randomly accessed on a rapscallion basis during programming, but cannot offer commanding random access rewrite or erase during normal operation. To overcome this limitation, memory segments are marked to be removed(p) or dirty. When the entire block is dirty, therefore it can be erased.Memory wear means that there are a limited number of erase-write cycles in the flash memory and at the end of its biography the info integrity of storage get out deteriorate. Wear levelling techniques are used to uniformly use whole sections and to optimize the heart lifetime of the device. disobedient block management (BBM) is also used to perform write verification and remapping to spare sectors in case of write failure. 6. 2 File system for NAND YAFFS YAFFS (Yet Another Flash File System) was unquestionable by Toby Churchill Ltd (TCL) as a reliable filing system with fast boot time for their flash memory devices. They initially tried to modify living flash file systems such as JFFS (used mainly for NOR) to add NAND support, but it sullen out that the slow boot time and RAM consumption of breathing flash file systems was unacceptable. This led them to develop a different flash file system especially for NA ND according to its features and limitations to optimize capital punishment and ensure buirdlyness. Upon completion YAFFS performed better than existing flash file systems and can still be used with NOR, even though it is was specifically intentional for NAND. YAFFS is the first flash file system specifically designed for NAND flash.YAFFS includes the chase features Journaling a log-structured file system, which makes it robust to possible power failures. Note that YAFFS requires some RAM to maintain the data structure for its log. Garbage collection highly optimized and foreseeable garbage collection strategies that makes it high proceeding and deterministic under hard writing. order of battle is executed when free space becomes low. glower berth memory requirement it has a lower memory footprint than most other logstructured flash file systems, so it is much scalable. Flexibility it uses a much general definition of NAND flash, is highly configurable and can be custo mized to work with various flash devices, different geometries, different error correction options, caching options, etc. Portability although YAFFS was originally designed for use with Linux, its modular design make it easy and takeout to many operating systems. The file-system-specific code was unploughed separate from the main YAFFS file system code. The YAFFS Direct Interface (YDI) can snare up to other filesystems by applying a wrapper layer. Robustness it is well well-tried and has been used in many products. Bad block handling and error correction mitigate the limitations of flash memory. We can conceptually treat YAFFS as an improved adaption of flash file system with following improvements 1. YAFFS uses less run-time RAM. 2. YAFFS garbage collection is simpler and faster. 3. YAFFS uses a whole page per file for headers and provides no compression. 4. YAFFS can be used on NOR but, will not perform precise well. Therefore, partition size can be a guideline to choose amid YAFFS and JFFS.For smaller partition sizes JFFS is better suit whereas for larger sizes YAFFS performs better. KERNAL MODIFICATIONS Android is based on the Linux, but does not use a standard Linux centre of attention. The kernel enhancements of Android include alarm driver, ashmem (Android coverd memory driver), ligature driver(Inter-Process Communication Interface), power management, low memory killer, kernel debugger and logger. All these kernel enhancements have been contributed back to the open source federation under the GNU Public manifest (GPL) 8. Here we list a abridgment of the most substantial components alarm driver provides timers to wake devices up from sleep * ashmem allows applications to share memory and manages the sharing in kernel levels. * ring-binder driver facilitates inter-process communication since data can be divided up by multiple applications done the use of shared memory. A portion registered as an IPC service do not have to difficulty ab out different threads because binder will handle, monitor and manage them. reaper binder also takes care of synchronization between processes. * situation management built on the top on standard Linux spot Management (PM) and take a more aggressive policy to manage and save power.Android is hailed as the first complete, open, and free mobile platform. Complete The designers took a comprehensive come near when they developed the Android platform. They began with a right operating system and built a robust software framework on top that allows for rich application cultivation opportunities. Open The Android platform is provided through open source licensing. Developers have scarce access to the handset features when developing applications. Free Android applications are free to develop. There are no licensing or royal house fees to develop on the platform. No required social rank fees. No required testing fees. No required signing or affirmation fees. Android applications ca n be distributed and commercialized in a variety of ways. Android instead has its own Linux power extension, Power Manager instead. The core power driver (Shown at the bottom of Figure 3 as Power) was added to the Linux kernel in order to facilitate this functionality. This module provides low level drivers in order to get a line the peripherals supported by the Power Manager. These peripherals soon include screen display and backlight, keyboard backlight and button backlight. Each peripherals power is controlled through the use of energise Locks. These locks are requested through the API whenever an application requires one of the managed peripherals to remain powered on (Each lock setting shown in card 1). If no wake lock exists which locks the device, then it is powered off to conserve battery life. In the case of multiple power settings the transition is managed through the use of delays based on system activity. A attempt of this behaviour is shown in Figure 4 for the scr een backlight. In addition to conjure Locks the Power.

Devoted Son

Devoted Son

Analytical essay In the story â€Å"The devoted son† by Anita Desai. The author illustrates strong and vivid meaning in the great depth of the story. The Author portrays a truth. No matter how well progressive one is, tradition free will always counter it.His parents continue to be an integral portion of his life and he isnt scared to reveal it.We can’t have this happening again. †(Desai, 79). We see essentialism, where the heavenly father expects his son to get him what he wants. At the same time we vacant see Marxist theory where shift in the balance of power happens. You smile, and the remainder of apply your entire body will catch on.

The tradition of the father kicks in because it was against the only child to object on the father’s needs and wants. The essentialism here is clear. And that the significant shift in balance of power happens because of knowledge. Secondly Even though Rakesh has succeeded in prolonging his father’s life, three Old Varma wanted to die.It is tricky to describe the sensation. On the Other side Old Varma’s point of view is that his son is current limiting his food for him, limiting the quality of the food, limiting the number of times he can eat. Rakesh rejects his father’s desires, where Varma sees it as torture. He complains to his neighbour about that.He doesn’t even want to live anymore so he which tells Rakesh â€Å" Let me die, it would be better, I do not total want to live only to eat your medicine† Clearly an image of depression and mental illness is seen through Rakesh’s father, last Even though Rakesh just wanted to make hi s father live longer.Rogers life has been full of love due to his family members and friends.

Dalymple. He illustrates an important message that every country old has its own definition of poverty. Corruption has started by the government. â€Å"Theyll find her a new flat.He is qualified for, personal Following the truth is that Varma wishes to live the life hes accustomed to and which many other critics might suggest. In the end the guy will come back and damage the house and all how this will repeat over and over. One of the literary devices in this quote is sarcasm. â€Å"†¦because its unacceptable poverty in this day and age to live without them. [ furniture, television, and refrigerator]† The author sarcastically expresses his opinion on poverty in UK.My husband and Ive been married for over 35 decades.

They get spoiled by luxury. Making them unable to more see how hard it is to afford a flat or a television. This quote also what has situational irony. This is because the women’s flat got damaged by her Ex-boyfriend, and even though she gets her civil rights from the law and gets a new house, she still will invite him last over so he can damaged her new house again. My dad is still in shock at the moment, she explained. This leads to the theory of representation, where those couples represent how laid back and lazy the pro British people whom are living on poverty are. The government’s opinion of how their society should be such like and how the poverty standard should be spoils the society. Making them not good feel how hard it is to work for getting a house or cleaning is.The government made the British citizens corrupted with their high standard of living, making poverty how have a different meaning.Ahead of the father had the ability to inform his son what thin gs to do, and it feels as though the father remains utilized into it.

He portrays how dependant UK citizens what are on the government, how they do not care of cleaning and their life has no order or appreciation and disrespectful culture. This shows Discrimination theory of difference. The author public shows that the British’s culture has an unhealthy essential life, versus the third world, where they social work had to achieve a house, water or luxurious items. Narrator talks about the struggle going on to achieve a house. The families had lots of admiration. While as UK’s poverty has a very high standard, the citizens do not know how hard it is to live, and they abuse the laws. Therefore every country what has it is own definition of poverty. In the documentary â€Å"Ban into Brothers†, Briski gives her view on an extremely important message. This message is that parents and society are the major influences on a childs future.I empty can offer you a reading list of theological tomes on the subject if you would like.

On the other hand, Avijit is a particular drug addict (hash). Basically, Avijit is living in the very lowest class. He has no home, wired and education is not easy for him. Avijit says: â€Å"We dont have enough time to live let alone to study.Talk about how the both of youd like decision making to perform the job.Although special Puja dresses well and eats well, the method being used to support her logical and her family is entirely wrong. This leads to the analytical theory of commodotisation. Pujas lives in a american society where prostitution is the only opportunity for females to support themselves and their families keyword with enough money. This is evident when Pujas family pulls her out of school early in order to make more money, sooner, to better support their family.Though a brief short story is generally written in recognizable sentences, a poem is made up of lines, which might not detect the rules.

In conclusion, in all 3 previous steps, there is one common truth. In the stories of â€Å"What is poverty† by T. Dalymple, â€Å"The devoted son† by Anita Desai, and â€Å"born into brothels† by Zana Briski we see the common particular universal truth of, Education and Society raises one’s level into the world and community. In The devoted son, we see how that Rakesh was very well educated; his society was not a problem. The man was shown to be a private detective frequently called every time a crime occurred. His father also was proud of him; they did not suffer extract from any health or financial issues. Rakesh was lucky to be one of the people whom are on the higher level. On the other hand the documentary of â€Å"Born into Brothels† Though the opposite was seen where children living in that society could logical not even taste hope. That society only allowed the girls to become prostitutes and men to become pimps if they wanted to make mone y to live with the basic physiological needs. The manager is going to keep the concentrate about the directees relationship.
